Total solar eclipses are usually pictured with the Sun near its highest point: a small black disc punched into a bright midday sky, corona flaring in every direction. On 12 August 2026, over Spain, that picture is wrong. The Sun will be low — between and 12° above the horizon, depending on where you stand in the band — because totality arrives in the last hour before sunset. That single fact rewrites almost everything about how to watch it.

A band that gets lower as it goes

The totality band enters Spain over Galicia and exits over the Balearics roughly eight minutes later, moving from northwest to southeast. Because the Sun keeps sinking the whole time, altitude drops steadily along that path:

By the time the shadow reaches the Balearics, the Sun has dropped to a third of the altitude it had over Galicia forty minutes earlier — and the azimuth has swung from 279° to 287°, meaning the exact patch of horizon you need clear to the west shifts city by city too.

The eclipse that doesn’t get to finish

A total eclipse normally runs through four contacts: the Moon starts covering the Sun (C1), totality begins (C2) and ends (C3), and the Moon finally clears the disc (C4). Over most of the world, all four happen with the Sun comfortably above the horizon. Not here. In A Coruña, Oviedo and Santander — the three westernmost cities, where the Sun is still highest — the fourth contact (C4) happens normally, at 21:21:54, 21:21:00 and 21:20:03 respectively, well before sunset.

From Bilbao eastward, that stops being true. Bilbao’s own dataset entry has no C4 timestamp at all — instead it lists a sunset time, 21:19:05, earlier than C4 would have occurred. The Sun sets first, mid-eclipse, and the partial phase simply gets cut off by the horizon rather than by the Moon finishing its pass. The same happens in Burgos (sunset 21:20:16), Zaragoza (21:07:35), Castelló (21:00:55), València (21:01:18) and Palma, where sunset arrives at 20:49:23 — barely 17 minutes after totality itself ends at 20:32:36. In Palma, in other words, the eclipse is still deep into its partial phase when the Sun simply drops out of the sky.

Madrid and Barcelona, both outside the totality band, follow the same pattern: partial eclipse still running strong at sunset, 21:16:20 and 20:54:49 respectively, with no fourth-contact timestamp on record because the horizon gets there first.

Why this actually matters for watching it

A low Sun means the corona will appear alongside real terrain — hills, rooftops, a coastline — rather than isolated against empty sky, which is part of why the “your town” horizon check on the map above matters so much (see our piece on the 85 towns the terrain blocks). It also means safe-viewing windows are shorter and more clustered near the western skyline than in a typical midday eclipse: the whole event, start to finish (or start to sunset), plays out compressed into roughly the last 90 minutes of daylight. And if you’re chasing every last second of the show rather than just totality, cities further west along the band — where the Sun is higher and C4 survives the sunset — are the only places where the eclipse is allowed to run its full natural course.
